Create Singapore's First Tango Artistic Company

Can you dance like these stars in 2008?

Click here to learn about Gladys and Juanito's 2007 workshop in Singapore

The Goal: Put Singapore's local rising star dancers on stage to perform side-by-side with professional performers and a world class tango orchestra.

Sounds like an impossible dream? We will never reach the star if we don't give it a try:

  • The name of the debut concert is tentatively Tango.. Todo Corazon ("Tango.. Every Heart"). It will be a full-length musical show for a theatre-size audience, raising fund for a worthy cause. Performance date is in mid-2008.

  • Headlining the show will be two familiar faces, maestros Gladys Fernandez (Argentina/Italy) and Juanito Juarez (France), They will also be providing artistic direction for this show.

  • Live music will be provided by Belgian sextet Tango Cero Dos under bandoneonist Patrick Vankeirsbilck, playing in the traditional style of "orquesta tipica".

  • Singapore's contingent will comprise 20 dancers selected to undergo a 9-month preparation training at Abrazos. They will appear both in the chorus line and also in solo numbers.

  • The show will be jointly produced by TangoSingapore and Tango East / Abrazos under funding from the related embassies (Belgium, France, Argentina, Italy), and Singapore's National Arts Council.

Audition

The Challenge: Find the right talents to undergo 9-months of preparation for the stage: 3 months on foundations, 3 months on choreography, and 3 months on presentation.

The audition will be conducted by Gladys Fernandez and Juanito Juarez.

Pre-requisites:

  • Preferably you should have three years or more of social tango experience; if not you should be able to catch up quickly.

  • Exposure to both traditional style and nuevo styles of Tango.

  • Good image and presentation.

  • Available for weekly rehearsal, and intensive rehearsals whenever the maestros are in town.

Audition Process:

  • Couples:
    • Dance one song of your choice; and
    • Improvise one song to music provided by the organiser.

  • Single Ladies:
    • Dance a short improvisation to a Piazzolla song

  • Bring along your CD, rehearsal and stage clothes.

Audition Date: Tue 24/apr 7.30pm Abrazos

Shortlisted dancers may be recalled on Wed 25/apr same time and venue for further briefing.

Note: If your interest is in music performance, please contact us by email and we will keep you informed about the musical company.

Why Should You Participate?

  • This is a golden opportunity to learn, experience, and shine, if your interest in tango is to become a stage performer.

  • You don't need to spend money to be coached by the very best. Tango East / Abrazos will provide a scholarship to cover the cost of your training up to the debut concert.

  • The company will continue to exist after the show. It will have further opportunities to perform, create new shows, and develop artistically.
