About Upper Club

Upper Club, an exclusive dance restaurant in Chijmes, has recently started Argentine tango, as it diversifies from a core ballroom dancing crowd.

Since it opened six months ago, the club has mainly attracted a ballroom crowd, mostly fashionable socialites, expatriates and businessmen, who close their wine and dine evening with a little social dancing to live music.

The restaurant's setup reflects this slant: it does not open for lunch, and the band only plays danceable tunes. A huge dance floor (7x12m) is also laid permanently in the centre of the dining hall.

The management is keen to draw more dancers to discover Upper Club, and for the Club to offer more music choices to its patrons.

The restaurant is a fine-dining establishment first and a dance venue second, so it will always need to cater to the high-spending diners over low-spending clubbers.

However, the club does have great ambience, excellent service and top chefs, so it can be a memorable special-occasion dining venue, even for the average joe.

We know that many ballroom dancers are ready to embrace tango, and if we can bring it closer to them, it will make the transition so much easier.

Tango Theme Nights @ Upper Club

We are co-organising a series of Argentine Tango theme nights at the Upper Club -- if the debut event turn out to be well-received.

The first theme night is scheduled for Sat 21/Jan, to run from 7.30pm until 1am. As the official organiser, we will be able to customize every aspect of the event:

  • It will be an authentic milonga, without any mixing of other musical genre. We have even banished the band for the night!

  • We will customize the seating arrangement to allow dancers to sit along the edge of the dance floor. It will bring the experience closer to Buenos Aires, with the possibility of using "cabeceo" to greet and invite each other.

  • There will be a special exhibition performance by our troupe dancers, to set the mood for the evening.

  • For the benefit of those diners who are new to the whole concept, information about social etiquette of milongas will be given out.

Details of Event

Entry to the event will be by the following:

  1. Set Menu (5-course plus drink) $75+++ only to tangueros who made prior reservation. Price is $88+++ at the door.
  2. Consumption of one a la carte main course item or one appetiser item from the menu (between $12 to 36+++)
  3. Non-dining tangueros pay $28+++ for two house pour drinks ($38+++ regular price).

If you are planning to attend, please identify yourself as a member of TangoSingapore to qualify for these promotions, otherwise you may be asked to pay the higher prices.

I would also appreciate you to let me know if you plan to attend, so we can make cosy seating arrangement for those who know each other. Otherwise, in a 3000 sq feet hall, it can be lonely to sit by yourself!

We have christianed the evening "San Telmo", because that is the district in Buenos Aires most identified with tango, and the location of most Tango-for-export dinner show restaurants.

This is a fantastic opportunity for Singapore to experience a bona fide Buenos Aires evening. If it turns out well, "San Telmo" can even become an icon attraction for tourists, not unlike Zouk's long running "Mambo Jambo" nights.
