Moti-Moses Buchboot (Home page, is a member of the younger generation of tangueros who are at the forefront of tango's next stage of evolution. He will present the philosophy of Tango Gravitas in this workshop.

Join him on a tango odyssey comprising four varied yet equally thrilling and inventive tango themes. Classes can be taken separately however, each subsequent class-in the order listed below-will build progressively on principles and concepts developed in the class or classes before it.

  • Moti's Crash Course for beginner / intermediate
-- This fast-paced, highly energized class will cover the basic tango elements and techniques including the tango walk, connecting to one's partner, ochos, and crossing to both sides. It will also introduce students to basic steps including the enganche (hook), the barrida (sweep), and the front and back planeo (airplane).

  • Musicality for intermediate / advanced
-- Tango music is a fusion of eclectic elements including the Cuban habanera, the African candombe, and the Spanish contra-dance, the melding of which can often be intimidating. This class will give you tools to tackle the different musical styles of tango. Through exercises geared toward expanding students' listening and dancing awareness, this class will examine the traditional tango beat as well as tango vals, milonga and candombe.

  • Sacadas for intermediate / advanced
. -- the most common term for a displacement of a leg by the partner's leg. A sacada occurs when a dancer places his leg against a leg of his or her partner and transfers weight to that leg so that it displaces the partner's leg. Learn how to effortlessly lead sacadas and how to follow them smoothly in both modern and traditional tango styles. This workshop will take you from basic introductions to advanced concepts. You will learn to precisely time and position sacadas, while maintaining a seamless connection to your partner.

  • Soltadas for intermediate / advanced
. -- Soltadas are "let go"-figures which transform the traditional embrace. Explore ways of breaking apart the common embrace, while maintaining basic lead and follow principles. Through principles borrowed from martial arts and modern dance, this workshop will examine ways to vary our dancing by experimenting with different forms of the embrace while incorporating tango elements such as barridas (sweeps) and enganches (hooks).

Other Issues
  • No partner? You are encouraged to come with a partner of the same level -- best way is to come for practicas before the workshop to meet other tangueros, and make arrangement to come to the same session. For lower level classes, there will be rotation of partners during the class for unpartnered participants. For higher level classes, you need to have a fixed partner for best learning results.

  • Videography Please ask instructor for permission before taping. Instructor usually do a recap of the lesson in the last 10 minutes for Q&A -- that is the best time to record.

  • Late Registration Please note the cut-off date for pre-registration. If you miss the deadline, you can still enjoy the lower rate by taking a season pass of 4 or more classes. Once you are pre-registered you can add more classes at the same preferred rate later.

  • Cancellation of class We reserve the right to cancel a class if the number of participants is too few. You will be given a credit to redeem at another workshop.

  • No-Shows We assume all tangueros to be credit-worthy, so we do not ask for pre-payment when you register. But if you fail to show up for a class after booking, your "good credit" record will become tainted and in future you may be required to pre-pay for class.
